40th anniversary of the signature of a joint declaration on the respect of fundamental rights by the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission of the European Communities

The 5th of April 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the adoption by the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission of the European Communities of a joint declaration on the respect of fundamental rights. On the 5th of April 1977 Roy Jenkins, President of the CEC, Emilio Colombo, President of the EP, and David Owen, British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and President in office of the Council, met in Luxembourg to sign this joint declaration demonstrating the Community's commitment to human rights. This declaration makes reference to the constitutions of the Member States as well as the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR).
