Engineer Yves Jongen greatly advanced proton therapy for cancer and made it available to a much larger number of people. To reduce the cost and boost the use of proton therapy, he pioneered the construction of a compact and efficient version of the proton-generating device called the ‘cyclotron', which was designed for clinical and therapeutic use. This makes it the first ‘fully articulated' prosthetic hand in the world. Muscle movement in the residual limb is detected by the hand's on-board computer and translated into movements in the prosthetic. Previous attempts at creating functional prosthetic hands had failed to deliver the range of motion and digit articulation users require for life and work. Mon, 27 May 2013 22:00:00 GMT http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077957&sitelang=fr European Inventor Award 2013 - Jörg Horzel, Johan Nijs, Jozef Szlufcik (Research) http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077954&sitelang=fr Jörg Horzel and his team developed a process that streamlined the production of silicon-based solar cells, which were long too expensive for commercially viable production. In order for solar cells to conduct electricity, their silicon base must be coated with phosphorous on one side, which involved applying a phosphorous paste to the entire front side of the cell. This caused some of the paste to end up on the rear side, and removing it was an expensive and time-consuming process. Horzel found a way to apply the paste to only certain sections of the cell surface, eliminating the step of removing it from the rear side. The result was a more efficient and cost-effective path to solar energy. Mon, 27 May 2013 22:00:00 GMT http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077954&sitelang=fr European Inventor Award 2013 - Martin Schadt (Lifetime Achievement) http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077960&sitelang=fr In 1970, Swiss physicist Martin Schadt created the world's first flat-panel liquid crystal display, better known as an LCD. Working in a lab at the pharmaceutical company F. Hoffmann-La Roche in Basel, he discovered that jolting liquid crystals with electricity would cause their spiral molecular structures to ‘unwind' and become opaque. The next step was to sandwich the crystals between two plates of plastic attached to an electric grid. By activating only tiny sections of the grid at a time, Schadt discovered that individual "pixels" could be manipulated with electricity to alter their light transmission, making them appear either transparent or opaque. Their low energy requirements meant LCDs could be operated with ordinary batteries, optimising them for consumer use. Mon, 27 May 2013 22:00:00 GMT http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077960&sitelang=fr European Inventor Award 2013 - Bruno Berge (SMEs) http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077956&sitelang=fr French physicist Bruno Berge reprised research on a physical phenomena known as ‘electrowetting', discovered at the turn of the 20th century. Berge realised the potential of this phenomena in deploying the technology as a lens. His invention employs two non-mixing liquids whose interface curves when exposed to electricity, thus changing the focus of the lens. The ‘liquid lens' is now sold by the company he founded, Varioptic S.A. Mon, 27 May 2013 22:00:00 GMT http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077956&sitelang=fr European Inventor Award 2013 - Philipp Koehn (Research) http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077955&sitelang=fr Thanks to Koehn and his team, computers no longer analyse sentences word by word but instead base their translations on whole sequences of words (phrases) to determine the most likely interpretation of a given text. Phrase-based translation reduces the restrictions imposed by the old word-based system. While a word may have several potential meanings (computers unfortunately cannot understand context), phrases usually have only one. Mon, 27 May 2013 22:00:00 GMT http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077955&sitelang=fr European Inventor Award 2013 - Sophie Wilson (Lifetime Achievement) http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077961&sitelang=fr Prior to the invention of the ARM chip, computer processors required a large number of complex instructions to complete tasks. Not only did this make task management difficult, it also required a whopping 135,000 transistors per processor, causing computer chips to suck up large amounts of energy. Wilson drew on an idea called Reduced Instruction Set Computing, or RISC, which was being developed by IBM at the time. She completely rewrote the operating instruction set for her new chip, reducing the number and complexity of instructions needed to make it work. This simplification also allowed her to reduce the number of transistors on each chip to about 25,000, dramatically slashing energy consumption. Mon, 27 May 2013 22:00:00 GMT http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077961&sitelang=fr European Inventor Award 2013 - Claus Hämmerle and Klaus Brüstle (Industry) http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077951&sitelang=fr These two Austrian inventors developed a damper system that facilitates the soft closing of furniture doors, drawers and wall cabinets. Derived from the suspension of an automobile and protected by numerous patents, 'Blumotion' is enjoying enormous market success worldwide and has become an industry standard in the field, with Austrian manufacturer Julius Blum exporting 96% of its products. Mon, 27 May 2013 22:00:00 GMT http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077951&sitelang=fr European Inventor Award 2013 - Patrick Couvreur (Research) http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I077953&sitelang=fr In the fight against cancer, scientists have long dreamed of a ‘magic bullet' to eliminate diseased cells without harming healthy tissue. This dream became reality when nano-capsules that deliver potent anti-cancer drugs directly to tumour sites entered clinical practice. The revolutionary method is based on breakthrough discoveries patented by Belgian-born nanotechnology pioneer Patrick Couvreur, Professor and Director of the Physical Chemistry, Pharmacotechnology and Biopharmacy Unit at Paris-Sud University in France. Patrick Couvreur was awarded a €2.2 million Advanced grant of the European Research Council in 2009. Mon, 20 May 2013 22:00:00 GMT http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I078428&sitelang=fr EU Cooperation with Mali: water and irrigation projects in the area of Segou, Mali http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I078211&sitelang=fr In the village of Sassanding, in the area of Segou, 235 km north east of Bamako, an EU-funded project has provided drinking water to 100,000 inhabitants of the region, bringing an end to waterborne(water related) diseases such as dysentery and diarrhea that had severe impact on infant mortality. In total, 550,000 people have received access to drinking water in Mali in the last five years thanks to a €40 million EU fund. The wells are equipped with counters. The cash paid by users supports the cost of maintenance of the water wells, pipes and tanks that were set up by the EU, thus supporting the long-term sustainability of this project. This project has had a positive impact on the health and economic development of villages like Sasandenge, where solar panels and agriculture livestock are clear signs of economic prosperity. A few kilometers away, a network of 125 kilometers of new irrigation channels built with EU fund is nearly finished and will provide access to 1000 farmers and their families and also to 2500 hectares of fertile and irrigated farming land. This €28 million infrastructure project is 90% funded by the EU and other international agencies. More than a third of the Malian economy lays on farming, a sector that employs 80% of the Malian population. A similar existing network of channels irrigates 1000 hectares of farm land. The channel brings fertility to the soil and smiles on the faces of the children who use it as a pool. The EU is to sign a €225 million state building contract with Mali in Brussels on May 15th 2013, aimed at restoring constitutional order through the organisation of free and fair elections. Sun, 12 May 2013 22:00:00 GMT http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I078211&sitelang=fr EU Cooperation with Mali: road infrastructure projects http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I078214&sitelang=fr Roads are key to link land lock Mali to the rest of the West African region, as well as the fertile Southern region of Mali to the desert North where a feeling of neglect is one of the causes of the 2012 Tuareg uprising. The EU has funded 4,500 kilometers of roads in the Republic of Mali, thus becoming Mali’s first partner on road infrastructure and transport in general since independence. Kati’s toll station and weigh bridge, 18 kilometers North of Mali’s capital Bamako, is one of the capital’s main entry points for products such as cement, salt, sugar, rice as well as oil products, as it links to the port of Dakar, in neighbouring Senegal. Authorities say there is a high percentage of overweighing by truck companies. In total, 28 station tolls such as this one have been built in recent years, generating yearly revenue of €4 million. When added to fuel levy, revenues allocated to road maintenance reach almost €30 million / year. Fight against overweighing means control and law enforcement but also dialogue between all transport actors, together with accompanying measures in order to raise public awareness and strengthen private sector. The EU has been the main contributor of this road that links Bamako to Dakar, providing a fund of €30 million. The EU is also funding a 483 kilometer tarmac road to link Goma Coura to Timbuktu. Sun, 12 May 2013 22:00:00 GMT http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I078214&sitelang=fr EU Cooperation with Mali: health projects http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I078216&sitelang=fr Training midwives is a key action to improve maternal health and reduce infant mortality. In Mali, the EU is funding a large training programme operated by a partnership between the Malian, the French and the Moroccan Red Cross. As a result, in urban centres like Bamako, mothers tend to give birth in maternity wards with qualified midwives, instead of giving birth at home. As part of this EU-sponsored programme, the Malian Red Cross also train health professionals and encourage them to go and work in rural areas. Even in the suburbs of the capital Bamako, patients have benefited from such trainings, as nurses trained by the Red Cross now run small health centres. Sun, 12 May 2013 22:00:00 GMT http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I078216&sitelang=fr EU Cooperation with Mali: food security projects in Ouéléssébougou, 40 kms South of Bamako, Mali http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I078215&sitelang=fr Farms in the area of Ouélessébougou, 40 kilometers South of Bamako, are located in Sikasso, region that has become the breadbasket of Mali, thanks to the hardworking population but also to the support of international donors such as the EU. Having food security as a top priority; the EU finance a €15 million resilience programme operated by the UN World Food Programme. It consists of transferring resources to the most vulnerable population in exchange of ots participation in the restoration of community assets. Examples of this activities are the framing the millet fields with rocks to preserve the land’s erosion, organising communal gardens to crop vegetables and of supporting the introduction of high nutritive value crops such as Moringa de Maroco, a tree nicknamed the tree of life, because of its high nutritive value. After 2012’s drought, local communities of the area of Ouélessébougou have taken part to EU-sponsored cash for work and food for work programmes which have led to the resumption of agriculture activities. Since 2005, the European Commission, which puts resilience at the heart of its work on fighting hunger and poverty, has launched a series of food security reinforcement programmes in Mali for more than €100 million. Sun, 12 May 2013 22:00:00 GMT http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I078215&sitelang=fr EU Cooperation with Mali: hygiene and waste management project in Bamako, Mali http://ec.europa.eu/avservices/video/player.cfm?ref=I078213&sitelang=fr In the capital Bamako, with 2 million inhabitants, authorities are overwhelmed by the waste management. Improvised dumps as high as mountains over looked the city. People throw their waste there; others send their cows grazing in the waste piles. Improvised recycling agents, some very young, try to save what can be sold. 'High Impact Training', a €300,000 programme financed by the EU has allowed to improve the situation. Over 400 recycling agents (have been) will be trained for waste management (in the last two years) until the end of 2013 by SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, a Dutch NGO, funded by the EU and other international agencies. They collect the waste from household, sort it and sell directly what is recyclable to local factories. Illegal logging is a global problem with significant negative economic, environmental and social impact. In economic terms illegal logging results in lost revenues and other foregone benefits. In environmental terms illegal logging is associated with deforestation, climate change and a loss of biodiversity. In social terms illegal logging can be linked to conflicts over land and resources, the disempowerment of local and indigenous communities, corruption and armed conflicts. Illegal activities also undermine the efforts of responsible operators by making available cheaper but illegal timber and timber products in the market place. On 20 February 2013, the European Commission launched its Social Investment Package, calling all Member States to put more emphasis on social investment as part of their social policy reforms so as to better respond to the social emergency caused by the economic crisis and the longer-term demographic challenges Europe is facing. The size of the working age population in Europe is shrinking, while the proportion of older people is expanding rapidly. This calls into question the way Member States can finance their social protection systems to ensure their sustainability and adequacy. Social investment means putting resources on those policies that enhance people's capacities to participate in society and the labour market. Aiming also to reduce poverty, social exclusion and inequality, the SIP package states that preventative services keep larger economic and social costs from arising in the future, and in the support of the common EU objective to lift at least 20 million people out of poverty and social exclusion by 2020. She has already undertaken research on rethinking Darwin's Theory of Evolution in the contemporary context. Her scientific approach is to study hunting as a force driving evolution. This way of measuring evolution is to study rapid changes in the behaviour of prey in presence of a predator. She spent 2 years in the US and 1 year in Spain comparing the evolution of predator and prey between the Bahamas and the Canary Islands. As a scientist, the IOF MC grant is helping her to improve her scientific skills and initiate strong collaborations with scientists in other parts of the world.
