Cérémonie du label du patrimoine européen avec la participation d'Androulla Vassiliou
The first European Heritage Label award ceremony took place on 8 April 2014 in Brussels, at the Solvay Library. Androulla Vassiliou Member of the European Commission for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, together with European political representatives and independent experts in the field attended the ceremony
The awards, highlighting heritage sites that celebrate and symbolise European integration, ideals, and history, went to: Carnuntum Archaeological Park, a Roman reconstructed quarter in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, Austria; the medieval Great Guild Hall in Tallinn, Estonia; the 100-year-old Peace Palace in The Hague, and Camp Westerbork, a World War II Nazi transit camp at Hooghalen, also in the Netherlands.
5 Member States were entitled to participate in the first selection process; Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. A total of 9 sites were submitted to the European Commission for pre-selection, in view of their roles in European history and the activities they develop to highlight their European dimension.
After a series of tough debates, the independent selection panel in charge of assessing the applications on the basis of the established criteria recommended the 4 sites above, and the Commission subsequently awarded all with the Label.
