Signature by Andris Piebalgs, of the contract for the transfer of the 12 million euro to OPCW (Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) for the destruction of the Syrian chemical stockpiles

On 17 February 2014, Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, received Ahmet Üzümcü, Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), in Brussels. They signed a contract for the transfer of the EU's 12 million euro financial support to a Trust Fund aimed to help destroy Syrian chemical stockpiles. The use of chemical weapons in Syria in August 2013 was firmly condemned by the international community and a number of initiatives including the creation of a Trust Fund were set out to respond to the challenge of destroying the chemical stockpiles. The activities covered by this programme include the transport, treatment and disposal of the chemical materials and effluents outside Syria, and will be implemented jointly by the OPCW and the United Nations, in order to secure their safe and environmentally sound destruction.
