Extracts from the press conference by Johannes Hahn, on Greek motorway
On 16 December 2013, Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, gave a press conference on the approval of Greece's major motorway projects. EU financial support worth € 2.97 billion to allow the building of four motorways in Greece had been approved on the same day. These investments – among the most important infrastructure projects in Greece – would be central to the country's economic recovery, connecting its regions with fast and safe motorways. The Commission had also found that the financial support granted by Greece was in line with EU state aid rules.
The motorways had been identified as "priority projects" investments by the European Commission and the Greek authorities: key to creating jobs and to the development of the country and its regions. It was expected that more than 6 000 jobs would be created during the building of the motorways. The projects should be completed by the end of 2015, with around 1 700 people then employed in managing them. PHOTOSHOTLIST
