Visit of Stephen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister, to José Manuel Barroso: signing ceremony of the joint declaration "A new era in EU/Canada relations", and joint press statement
On 18 October 2013, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Stephen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister, reached a political agreement on the key elements of a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) after months of intense negotiations between Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, and Ed Fast, Canadian Minister for International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway. This is the first free trade agreement between the European Union and a G8 country. Boosting trade relations with Canada will generate new opportunities for growth and the creation of jobs in the EU.
