Questions and answers to Johannes Hahn on the tragic accident outside Lampedusa

On 3 October 2013, Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, expressed his regret at the tragedy that took place in the sea surrounding the island of Lampedusa, Italy. On 3 October, Lampedusa experienced the worst immigration tragedy in recent years: over 130 migrants died and some 200 were reported missing after the sinking of a boat near the small Sicilian island. According to the authorities, the vessel, departed from Libya, was carrying between 450 and 500 migrants, and only about 150 of them were rescued, which raises fears of a death toll of around 300. This video shows the Commissioner answering a question put to him by a journalist about the EU’s responsibility in this matter.
