On 26 September 2013, Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, travelled to the United States and attended the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. On this occasionhe met with Catholic leaders and Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
