On 8 October 2013, Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, travelled in El Salvador in order to confirm the EU's commitment to help the country to develop by providing new funding between 2014-2020. The new support will focus on the areas of social services for young people, private sector development and climate change and vulnerability with the objective of improving the livelihoods of those who need it most.
During his stay, Andris Piebalgs met with Mauricio Funes Cartagena, President of El Salvador, Jaime Miranda, Salvadoran Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hugo Martínez, Secretary-General of the Central American Integration System (SICA), and María Antonieta Guillén de Bográn, Vice-President of Honduras.
