Statement by Štefan Füle on the Speak Up!2 conference on media freedom in the Western Balkans and Turkey (20/06/2013)
On 17 June 2013, Štefan Füle, Member of the EC in charge of Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, made a statement on the Speak Up!2 conference on media freedom in the Western Balkans and Turkey, scheduled for the 20th June in Brussels.
The European Commission's annual strategy on EU enlargement, adopted in October 2012, highlighted freedom of expression and media as one of the most important challenges for the countries aspiring to EU membership. Moreover, freedom of expression is considered an EU accession priority. The conclusions of the first Speak Up! conference, hosted by DG Enlargement in 2011, became an important reference point for tackling issues in this field. SHOTLIST
