Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, embarked on a visit to the site of the "Città della Scienza" located in Bagnoli, in Naples, to take stock of the damages caused by a large fire on 4 March 2013. Buildings have been destroyed the 500 people working there are now unemployed.
Together with Stefano Caldoro, President of the Campania Region, and Luigi de Magistris, Mayor of Naples, Johannes Hahn expressed the Commission's commitment to take part in the huge solidarity movement generated at national and international level after the fire. The "Città della Scienza" is a pioneering science museum attracting some 350 000 visitors per year and hosting innovative Small and Medium Sized Enterprises working in the ICT and environment sectors. The "Città della Scienza" was built on a former steelworks area and many of its activities like exhibitions and the setting up of the innovation agency were co funded by EU structural funds. The destruction has been perceived by citizens as a loss of a "national emblem" of rehabilitation and revitalization of disaffected areas. LISTE DES PLANS
