Education, Youth, Culture and Sports Council, 30/05/2016
On Monday, 30/05/2016, the Education, Youth, Culture and Sports Council takes place in Brussels. The Council adopts conclusions on the role of the youth sector in preventing and combating violent radicalisation of young people. These conclusions stress the invaluable contribution that youth work, sport, voluntary and cultural activities can make in reaching out to young people who might otherwise be vulnerable to radicalisation. The Council adopts conclusions on promoting media literacy and critical thinking through education and training. These conclusions acknowledge the many benefits and opportunities that the internet and social media can bring, while also highlighting the potential threats they can present. Ministers also discuss the modernisation of higher education in Europe. This discussion allows them to put forward the issues they wish to be included in the forthcoming review of the agenda for the modernisation of Europe’s higher education systems. Ministers debate the promotion of European audiovisual content. They consider several issues, such as content creation versus audience reach, co-productions. national financial incentives and quotas. Ministers exchange views on the role of governments on improving governance in sport. The sport sector has been essentially self-regulated, with sports organisations enjoying a great autonomy. The Council is due to adopt conclusions on enhancing integrity, transparency and good governance in major sports events.
