European Heritage Label Award Ceremony, with the participation of Tibor Navracsics, Member of the EC
The European heritage label was awarded on March 26 to nine new places at the International conference: “Cultural heritage – for a more sustainable Europe”, which is being held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, on March 26-27, in the framework of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of European Union. The European Heritage Label is a recognition awarded by the European Union to buildings, documents, museums, archives, monuments or events which are seen as milestones in the creation of today's Europe. The program is managed by the European Commission. 38 places in total in Europe have been awarded the label, including the new sites. The nine new sites are: Leipzig’s Musical Heritage Sites (Germany); Dohány Street Synagogue Complex (Hungary); Fort Cadine (Italy); Javorca Church (Slovenia); Former Natzweiler concentration camp and its satellite camps (France and Germany); Sighet Memorial (Romania); Bois du Cazier (Belgium); Village of Schengen (Luxembourg); Maastricht Treaty (The Netherlands). The European Heritage Label started as an intergovernmental initiative between 17 individual EU member states during a meeting in Granada, Spain on 28 April 2006. The initiative's main aim was to identify and designate sites which have played a key role in building a united Europe and to see those sites through a European, rather than national, viewpoint. On 20 November 2008, the Council adopted conclusions aimed at transforming the intergovernmental initiative into a Union action by inviting the Commission to submit to it a proposal for the creation by the Union of a European Heritage Label and to specify the practical procedures for the implementation of the project. Public hearings and impact assessments were carried out, confirming the added value of EU involvement. In 2010, the European Commission announced the plans for the EU-wide scheme known as the European Heritage Label and it was officially established on 16 November 2011. Under the new Label, the first four sites were designated in 2013, with sixteen more designations following in 2014. Candidate sites for the label must have a symbolic European value and must have played a significant role in the history and culture of Europe and/or the building of the Union.

Visit of Tibor Navracsics, Member of the EC, to Bulgaria
An International conference: “Cultural heritage – for a more sustainable Europe” in the framework of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of European Union was held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, on March 26-27. A wide range of public and private stakeholders, highest representatives of EU Institutions, Member States and civil society organizations from all over Europe are taking part in the event, including Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport. Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Culture Amelia Gesheva opened the ceremony on Monday evening. The main three thematic workshops in the conference programme are: competences of the European Union in the field of cultural heritage; mainstreaming of cultural heritage - equality of policies, and participatory governance of cultural heritage- how to turn good European practices into a model of socially inclusive governance. Supporting cultural communication and the preservation of cultural heritage are the basis of rebuilding the trust in the common European future. This was the common standpoint of the participants in the conference. Commissioner Navracsics noted that in the year dedicated to European heritage, special attention was being given to the connection between heritage and tourism. Luca Jahier, incoming President of the European Economic and Social Committee, promised that during his term as President of the Committee, culture would be a priority, and the heritage resources would be used for overcoming the growing eurosceptical attitude in Europe. The European delegates are in Plovdiv to award for the first time outside of Brussels the European heritage label. The label is being awarded to nine new places connected to European culture and memory. European Heritage sites are milestones in the creation of today’s Europe. Spanning from the dawn of civilization to the Europe we see today, these sites celebrate and symbolise European ideals, values, history and integration. Since 2013, these sites have been carefully selected for their symbolic value, the role they have played in the European history and activities they offer that bring the European Union and its citizens closer together.
