High Level Conference on "Lessons learned for public health from the Ebola outbreak in West Africa – how to improve preparedness and response in the EU for future outbreaks"
On 12 October 2015, Vytenis Andriukaitis, Member of the EC in charge of Health and Food Safety, and Christos Stylianides, Member of the EC in charge of Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management; EU Ebola Response Coordinator, participated in the high level conference entitled "Lessons learned for public health from the Ebola outbreak in West Africa – how to improve preparedness and response in the EU for future outbreaks". The conference was jointly organised by the EC and the Luxembourg Presidency of the EU. The aim of this conference was to identify learning points arising from the Ebola epidemic to strengthen health security in the EU, enhance the preparedness and response capacities of EU Member States and put us in the position to respond rapidly and effectively to emergencies and disease outbreaks. The other participants at the conference included: Lydia Mutsch, Luxembourgish Minister for Health and Minister for Equal Opportunities and President in office of the Council of the EU, Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Hermann Gröhe, German Federal Minister for Health, and Martin Seychell, Deputy Director-General of DG Health and Food Safety of the EC. The award ceremony to grant the European Health Prize - devoted this year to NGOs which have been active in fighting Ebola followed the conference.
