Brussels European Council
On 22 and 23 June 2017, the European Heads of State or Government gathered in Brussels for a two-day meeting. The first working session focused on security and defence issues. Leaders discussed counterterrorism and how to better combat radicalisation. The European Council supported a strengthening of EU cooperation on external security and defence. The working dinner focused on foreign policy issues in light of recent Summits and meetings, including with the US and Turkey Leaders. The European Council reaffirmed its commitment to the Paris Agreement on climate. Leaders also took stock of the implementation of the Minsk agreements. At the end, Theresa May, British Prime Minister, informed the Leaders about the Brexit negotiations. There was also a session of the European Council (Article 50), where the EU27 Leaders discussed the state of play of Brexit negotiations with the UK. In the margins of this meeting, the Heads of State or Government endorsed the procedure to decide on the relocation of the two EU agencies currently located in the UK. Economic and trade issues were also on the agenda. Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to free trade and investment, while ensuring it is also fair and the benefits are reciprocal. The Heads of State or Government also finalised the European Semester process. Leaders took also stock of ongoing measures to tackle migration issues and talked about how to move towards a digital vision for Europe.
