Education and Training Monitor highlights impact of budget cuts and skills mismatch


Sixteen Member States decreased their spending on education between 2008 and 2011, with six showing further significant budget decreases in 2012, according to the latest Education and Training Monitor released today by the European Commission. The 2013 Education and Training Monitor provides a picture of each country's progress in relation to specific benchmarks and indicators, and highlights the latest policy developments and analysis.


Eurovision stars top bill at 'Cyprus Unplugged' show


Eurovision stars Anna Vissi, Constantinos Christoforou and Despina Olympiou will take part in a 'Cyprus Unplugged' benefit concert at the Palais des Beaux Arts (Bozar) in Brussels on 9 November. All proceeds from the event, organised under the patronage of European Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou, will go to charities on the island supporting disadvantaged children and families.

One in five adults in Europe have low literacy and numeracy skills, and even a university degree in the same subject is no guarantee of the same level of skills in different countries, according to the first comprehensive international Survey of Adult Skills published today by the OECD and European Commission.

EBBAs - winners of 2014 European music awards


The winners of the 2014 European Border Breakers Awards (EBBAs), celebrating the best new pop acts in Europe which have achieved cross-border chart success, were announced today by Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and Eurosonic Noorderslag, the European music conference and showcase festival.

More needs to be done to encourage 'media literacy' among children, according to Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth. This will be her main message when she visits 'Cinekid', the world's largest media festival for children, in Amsterdam on 21 October.
