Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou has welcomed the fact that four of the five movies nominated as Best Foreign Language Film for the Oscars are supported by the EU's Creative Europe MEDIA programme. The UK film Philomenia, nominated as Best Picture and for Best Actress, as well as films in the categories of Best Animated Feature Film and Best Documentary Feature, have also received support from the MEDIA sub-programme.

Italy's La Grande Bellezza was awarded both development and distribution support, as was this year's Danish candidate for the Oscar, The Hunt. Philomena, nominated both as Best Picture and with Judi Dench as Best Actress, received distribution support.

The Missing Picture - Cambodian candidate for the Foreign Language Oscar also received development and distribution funding through the French co-producer of the film.

The French-Belgian co-production Ernest and Celestine is one of the strong candidates in the category for Best Animated Feature Film, as is the Danish-Norwegian-UK co-production The Act of Killing for Best Documentary Feature.

The MEDIA sub-programme of Creative Europe aims at strengthening the European film industry within Europe and beyond.  The 86th Annual Academy Awards take place on 2 March.

"It's tremendous to see how many films backed by MEDIA are in the Oscar race," said Commissioner Vassiliou. "We are keeping our fingers crossed for them all and I wish everyone associated with the films the best of luck."
