Vassiliou salutes inspirational Spanish team

Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou has sent an official letter to congratulate the Spanish national team following their victory in the EURO 2012 football championship – the team's third international success in consecutive tournaments.

In the letter, Commissioner Vassiliou writes:

"The Spanish national football team has taken the concept of sporting success to new heights. Not only have they achieved the unprecedented feat of winning three major tournaments in a row, but they have done it by playing the most impressive football of modern times and, most importantly, by demonstrating a remarkable level of humility and respect both on and off the field of play.

As European Commissioner for Sport, I feel particularly proud of the spirit shown by the Spanish players and hope that they will carry it forward in the future as well. In these trying times, and in this era of mass communication and public role-models, I have no hesitation in saying that it is the kind of hard work, dedication and team-spirit so clearly portrayed by this team that should be an inspiration to our youth and indeed all of us."

Spain, who beat Italy with an emphatic 4-0 victory at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, also won the EURO 2008 title, beating Germany 1-0 in the final, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where they defeated the Netherlands 1-0 after extra time.

Commissioner Vassiliou had also earlier saluted 'La Roja' (the Reds) via her Twitter account, writing after the final: "What a wonderful performance by the Spaniards! Brilliant game. Congratulations to this excellent team."
