Commissioner holding the Ryder Cup
From Seve to Vassiliou – Europe loves the Ryder Cup

Tiger Woods and his US team-mates came agonizingly close to snatching golf's most coveted trophy last autumn, but as you can see the Ryder Cup is still very firmly in European hands.

Over the years, the historic chalice has been held by the sport's biggest names, from Seve Ballesteros and Colin Montgomerie to Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. On 30 March, it was Androulla Vassiliou's turn, in her capacity as Commissioner responsible for sport.

EU and Brazil launch policy dialogue on higher education and culture

Commissioner Vassiliou made her first official visit to Brazil on 3-9 April to launch EU-Brazil policy dialogues on higher education and culture. As a result of these high-level talks, specific fora will be created for policy-makers and professionals, focused on jointly agreed priorities in higher education and culture. Further developments will be discussed at the next EU-Brazil summit, due to take place in Brussels in October. A cultural round table will also be organised.

UK Parliamentary report backs future EU funding for education, culture and sport

Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou has welcomed the findings of a new UK Parliamentary report which underlines the need for continued EU support for education and culture in the Union's new financial framework from 2014.

The 10-chapter document, drawn up by the House of Lords European Union Committee, calls for "continued provision" for the Commission's Lifelong Learning Programme, which includes the Erasmus student exchange scheme, as well as its Culture and MEDIA (cinema) funds and prospective future Sport programme.
