21.10.2011, launch of the first 2 operational Galileo Satellites from Kourou, French Guiana in presence of Vice-President Tajani, the Council Presidency, Mr Wauquiez French Minister for Education and Research, ESA, CNES, African Union Commissioner Ezin, MEP Tosenovsky.

21.10.2011:  publication of the tender for 6 to 8 additional Galileo satellites to have a constellation of 24-26 satellites in orbit by 2015.

30.11.2011 "Proposal for a Regulation on further implementation of the European satellite navigation programmes (2014 – 2020)", COM(2011) 814. The proposal sets up a new governance for the programmes. It also pre-allocates a EUR 7 billion budget to cover the completion of the Galileo infrastructure and the exploitation of EGNOS and of the system established under the Galileo programme.

25.10. 2011 Decision No 1104/2011/EU on the rules for access to the public regulated service provided by the global navigation satellite system established under the Galileo programme.

Since its publication, the Action plan on GNSS applications has being implemented. Priority has been given to actions involving EGNOS and the following examples of the achievements may be given:

  • the EGNOS Safety of Life service for aviation was declared operational on 2 March 2011;
  • 19 July 2011: adoption of a proposal for a regulation on chronotachygraphs imposing that they are GNSS-enabled,COM(2011)451;
  • 15.11.2011: publication of an EGNOS toolkit to ease the work of developers when developing an EGNOS-based application on smartphones.

19.12.2011 Commission Decision on the Annual Action Programme 2011 in favour of Intra-ACP cooperation to be financed from the 10th European Development Fund on a Capacity Building for the preliminary phase for EGNOS-Africa C/2011/9547.

14.2.2011  Proposal for a Council decision on the conclusion and provisional application of the cooperation Agreement on Satellite Navigation between the EU, its Member States and Norway, COM(2011)51.

17.3.20011 Proposal for a Council Decision on the conclusion of the Agreement on the promotion, provision and use of GALILEO and GPS satellite based navigation systems and related applications between the United States of America, of the one part, and the European Community and its Member States, of the other part, COM(2011) 124.

VP Tajani signed letters of intent for space cooperation with the relevant ministers of Brazil and Chile.
