Taxation and Customs Union
Algirdas Šemeta, Commissioner for Taxation, Customs, Audit and Anti-fraud, is visiting Moscow today to discuss ways in which customs cooperation between the EU and Russia can be reinforced. Among the issues he will be discussing with his counterparts is the establishment of a Strategic Framework to facilitate trade between both sides, while ensuring the security of the supply chain and the fight against fraud.
"It is incredibly important that Member States are able to collect tax revenues they are due, especially in this time of economic difficulty. To this end, the EU must step up its fight against tax fraud and tax evasion, and continue to lead the campaign for good governance which implies a reinforced cooperation on exchange of information".
This is the key message of the speech delivered by Taxation Commissioner Algirdas Šemeta at an event organised by the Belgian Presidency and the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) on International Fiscal Data Exchange today.
