Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič meets Mercedes Bresso, President of the Committee of the Regions
On Wednesday, 30th June, Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič met Mercedes Bresso, the recently elected President of the Committee of the Regions. Mr Šefčovič underlined the importance of close working relations between the EU institutions if the maximum benefits are to be gained from the changes brought by the Lisbon Treaty. Regions have a crucial role to play in helping Europe recover from the economic crisis and in implementing the Europe 2020 strategy, and the Vice-President expressed the Commission's willingness to call on the Committee's expertise.
Mr Šefčovič welcomed the work of the Covenant of Mayors on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the ongoing cooperation with regions in Mediterranean partner countries. He expressed the Commission's willingness to coordinate with the Committee in a flexible way on issues including the fight against poverty and the EU health strategy and pledged to follow up the Committee's White Paper on multi-level governance. Vice-President Šefčovič and President Bresso pledged to continue to work closely together in the coming months.
