On Monday, President Barroso delivered a closing speech at the conference "A New Deal for Somalia". A total pledge of € 1.8 billion was raised during the conference, from 50 bilateral and multilateral donors.

The offer of pledges amounted to € 1.8 billion and, including 650 million euro pledged by the European Commission to support the country.

"We can say the Brussels conference has been successful, and we are proud to be part of that effort. The Conference has highlighted the commitment of the Somali people to work together, and the strong solidarity from the International Community to help Somalia achieve its goals", the President said in his closing remarks.

Somalia's eight-year transition ended in September 2012, with the peaceful handover to a new Federal Government. The Conference's objective was to sustain the positive momentum in Somalia, to ensure that the country stays on the path to stability and peace and brings prosperity to its people. The "New Deal" is the driver of this process.
