Connie Hedegaard: is it wise to cut budget now?
Commenting on criticism by Bjarne Corydon, Denmark's Finance Minister, of the Commission's proposed 2013 EU budget increase of 6.8%, Connie Hedegaard said:
"It is important to understand that this is a legal obligation for the Commission. The system is such that the money is committed before it is paid. And usually, most of the money is paid at the end of the budget period. 2013 is the last year in the current budget period. If the Commission cuts the budget, we will not fulfil the legal obligations we have. The question to the Member States must therefore be: Do you want to cut down on EU-funded activities? Is it wise to do so right now?"
