11/11/2011  -

Today the Commissioner is in Rome, where she has met Gianni Letta, Under Secretary of State to the presidency of the Council of Ministers, to discuss civil protection issues. Yesterday afternoon she addressed a conference to mark the 10th anniversary of the European Civil Protection Mechanism which over the last decade has grown in strength to become an essential part of the EU's toolbox in reaction to natural and man made disasters. The Mechanism plays a key role in providing the logistical and transport support necessary in getting aid from EU member states to the scene of disasters in as short a time as possible.

Yesterday evening she spoke at a conference on humanitarian volunteering in the Vatican City. Today she will meet with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican's Secretary of State. Among other things the strong presence of Italian and Catholic NGOs in the humanitarian field will be discussed, as well as the volunteer ethos that helps these organisations achieve so much.
