Commissioner Georgieva and her colleagues discuss sustainable development with the Prince of Wales

Prince of Wales meets Commissioner Georgieva in Brussels
09/02/2011  -

HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, was in Brussels to discuss with a group of EU Commissioners how economic progress and tackling climate change can be addressed simultaneously. During the meeting, Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva gave an overview of the rise in both intensity and frequency of disasters - two trends that are closely linked to climate change. Since disasters hit poor and developing countries the hardest, the point was made that disaster prevention needs to be a central element of sustainable development policies. The Commissioner also underlined the importance of understanding disaster prevention as an investment opportunity and not as an expense: recent studies have indicated that every euro spent on disaster prevention can generate a return of between 4 and 7 euro.
