Commissioner addresses the launch of the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI), Brussels

"The primary goal of the EHRI is to bring together information that is currently located in archives across Europe. [...] EHRI will design and implement a Virtual Research Environment offering online access for researchers to a wide variety of dispersed Holocaust archives and to a number of tools to work with them."

Brussels, 16 November 2010

"Minister Sa’ar, Sir Nathan Ramet, Mr. Chairman,

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

I would like to begin by thanking the Belgian Presidency for hosting this event and the organisers for making it happen. As the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, it is an honour to participate in this conference.

Ladies and Gentlemen, there is no doubt the Holocaust causes us to reflect upon the most terrible experiences and events, the tragedies and horrors that Europe suffered during the 1930s and 1940s. Our resolve that we must never again witness atrocities such as those of the Holocaust lies at the very heart of the foundation of the European Union.
