On 23rd and 24th June 2010, Mr László Andor EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs & Inclusion opened in Brussels a high level conference on the contribution of the European Social Fund (ESF) to the Europe 2020 Strategy, along with Ms Maravillas Rojo Torrecilla, Secretary General for Employment, Spain and Ms Pervenche Berès, Chair of the Employment Committee, European Parliament.
This conference brought together high level representatives from public authorities, social partners and civil society at EU and national levels as well as from third countries. The aim of the two-day event is to acknowledge past achievements of the ESF in supporting EU objectives and to explore how the Fund can contribute effectively to the EU's new strategy for the next decade: Europe 2020 .
The ESF is one of the key financial levers in translating the Europe 2020 into a reality on the ground. The Fund has particular role to play in supporting several of the Europe 2020 strategy's flagship initiatives, such as "An Agenda for New Skills for New Jobs", "Youth on the Move" and the "Platform against Poverty".
