  • Commissioner will pledge on 2 March in Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt) €436 million ($554 million) to the Palestinian people for 2009 at the “Conference in Support of the Palestinian Economy for the Reconstruction of Gaza”
  • Ferrero-Waldner on her meeting with US Secretary of State Clinton
Benita Ferrero-Waldner, European Commissioner for External Relations and Neighbourhood Policy, met United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, in Washington today for talks covering the Middle East Peace Process, Afghanistan and Europe's Eastern Neighbourhood. In a warm and constructive atmosphere, they identified many areas of common concern and topics for future cooperation.
After the meeting, Benita Ferrero-Waldner said: "This meeting provides an excellent basis for our future cooperation. We agreed to work together in the Middle East Peace Process Quartet and discussed the need for a sustainable ceasefire and opening of Gaza for humanitarian assistance. We share the view that the situation in Afghanistan/Pakistan must be a priority for the months to come, and discussed our complementary efforts on the ground. Both of us are deeply concerned about the impact of the financial crisis in some parts of Europe's Eastern neighbours and, in particular, in Ukraine."
She added: "I look forward to pursuing the dialogue with Secretary of State Clinton on these and other many matters, including at the Conference in Support of the Palestinian Economy for the Reconstruction of Gaza, in Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt) next Monday, and during the EU-US Troika meeting in Brussels next week. The European Commission is determined to work closely with the Obama administration also on issues of global concern, such as climate change, energy security and the financial crisis."
