The Council Recommendation of 14 November 2005 asked for promotion of best practice with regard to national and European law on the management of, and the access to, documents and archives. To this end EURONOMOS, a legal database for archives in Europe, was created.
Euronomos provides easy cross-border online access to archival and related legislation as well as interpretative and contextual information, both from the EU Member States and from the European Union itself. The database serves allows for the monitoring of such legislation and facilitates the identification and dissemination of best practice requested by the Council. The development of Euronomos was managed by the European Commission in cooperation with the Directorate for French archives and the European Branch of the International Council on Archives (EURBICA) and was funded from the European Union's IDABC programme.
Euronomos is maintained by the Member States and hosted by the International Council on Archives (ICA).
