The Commission submitted a Report on Archives in the enlarged European Union [7 MB] to the Council of Ministers in February 2005. The report was drafted by a group of experts from the Member States and the European institutions in response to the Resolution on archives in the Member States adopted by the Council on 6 May 2003.
The report addresses the situation of public archives in the Member States and the institutions of the European Union and their probable evolution in the years ahead against the background of enlargement. It suggests ways of improving document and archives management and archive services for the citizens of the European Union and contains a number of suggestions for concrete actions as well as some orientations for increased cooperation between archives in the future.
The report led to the adoption of the Council Recommendation on priority actions to increase cooperation in the field of archives in Europe (2005/835/EC ), of 14 November 2005. In the autumn of 2008, the EAG presented to the Council a Progress Report (COM(2008)500) on the implementation of the 2005 Council Recommendation.
