Bringing together the operational expertise of anti-fraud investigators and the good administrative practices of services managing and supervising aid funds in Africa is the aim of an international conference co-organised by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) and EuropeAid Co-operation Office of the European Commission. The three-day event is taking place in Kampala, Uganda, and will close on Thursday.

"The fight against fraud affecting EU external aid funds is one of our operational priorities", OLAF-Director General Franz-Hermann Brüner emphasised. "In order to be as effective as possible in the prevention and detection of such irregularities, our investigators need to build and maintain close contacts with the operational services of the countries where the money is spent", he added.

The conference on "The Protection and Optimisation of Public Funds: Co-operation between National and International Authorities" in Africa is organised by OLAF and EuropeAid in co-operation with the Office of the Auditor General and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions of the Republic of Uganda. The principal aim of this conference is to improve cooperation between national and international services responsible for management and control of public funds, in order to optimise the effectiveness of external aid.

The conference is bringing together representatives from 19 African countries and several International Organisations, around 120 participants in all. The national authorities participating are the General Public Prosecutors, the Presidents of the Courts of Auditors, the Inspectors General of State or of Finance and the heads of other operational services specialised in the prevention of and the fight against corruption and fraud.

This third regional conference in Africa follows previous ones in Rabat (Morocco, 2007) and Cape Town (South Africa, 2008).
