The Director General of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), Mr. Franz-Hermann
Brüner, met Bulgaria’s Ministers of European
Affairs and Finance, Ms Gergana Grancharova
and Mr Plamen Oresharski, today in Brussels.
At their meeting they discussed co-operation
between OLAF and the Bulgarian authorities
in the fight against fraud affecting the
EU budget in general as well as current
issues.
At the end of the meeting, Mr Brüner declared: "We had a very open dialogue.
We discussed current challenges in Bulgaria
and I expressed OLAF’s concern about certain
developments." He added: "I am confident
that the Bulgarian authorities will do
their utmost to take the necessary steps."
Background
Concerning
Bulgaria OLAF currently has 28 cases under
evaluation; in another 17 cases investigations
are ongoing.
OLAF's
work is structured in three phases:
1.
Evaluation (or assessment) phase: OLAF
analyses all new information available
with a view to deciding whether an investigation
proper has to be opened or not.
2.
Formal decision whether to open an investigation
or not.
3.
Investigation phase.
