OLAF /07/11 Brussels, 19 October 2007
In close cooperation with the Hungarian
Customs and Finance Guard, the European
Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) organised
this year's Task Group Cigarette conference
which took place this week in Budapest.
More than 80 experts representing the 27 Member States of the European Union,
third countries (Croatia, Egypt, Russia,
Ukraine and the USA), Europol, World Customs
Organization and OLAF were participating
at the five-day conference, whose aim was
to enhance international operational cooperation
and to support the fight against cigarette
smuggling and cigarette counterfeiting
by information exchange.
twelfth Task Group Cigarette conference
provided an excellent opportunity for the
representatives of nearly 40 customs and
law enforcement agencies to share experience
about latest trends and, after return to
their home administrations, to continue
the fight more effectively against cigarette
smuggling and counterfeiting.
regard to the fact that cigarette smuggling
affects not only the EU and Member States'
revenue but also employment of EU citizens,
OLAF considers the support of the fight
against cigarette smuggling and cigarette
counterfeiting as a priority and plans
to continue to organise the Task Group
Cigarette conference in the future.
