EUROPEAN OMBUDSMAN CLOSES BLUE DRAGON INQUIRY

OLAF/04/13 Brussels, the 29 July 2004

The European Ombudsman, Mr. P. Nikiforos Diamandouros, has closed his inquiry into the so-called " Blue Dragon " case.

The Ombudsman made a draft recommendation to the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) in February 2004
http://ombudsman.europa.eu/recommen/en/021769olaf.htm.

On 18 March 2004, OLAF submitted its detailed opinion in response to this draft recommendation. On the basis of its analysis, OLAF concluded that the points raised by the Ombudsman did not call into question the adequacy of the inquiry and therefore there were no grounds for re-opening its inquiry or opening a new inquiry
(see OLAF press release of 19 March 2004All available translations.).

The European Ombudsman's decision, which can be found on the following website: http://ombudsman.europa.eu/decision/en/021769olaf.htm, examines in detail OLAF's response to each of the points raised in the draft recommendation and explains why the Ombudsman considers that there is no need for him to conduct further inquiries into the case.
