German Federal Minister of Justice opens OLAF Conference of Fraud Prosecutors
At a conference of fraud prosecutors in Berlin on 8-9 November, the German Federal Minister of Justice Ms Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger expressed support in her opening speech for the establishment of a European Public Prosecutor's Office for the protection of financial interest of the EU. The European Commissioner responsible for the fight against fraud Mr Algirdas Šemeta, the Minister of Justice of the Land Berlin Mr Thomas Heilmann, the Prosecutor General of the Land Berlin Mr Ralf Rother, the Director-General for Justice Ms Françoise Le Bail of the European Commission and OLAF’s Director-General Giovanni Kessler also held opening speeches at the conference. "A future European Public Prosecutor's Office for the protection of the EU's financial matters should be streamlined, decentralised, independent and effective," said the German Federal Minister of Justice Ms Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger.
Co-organised by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) and the Prosecutor General's Office of the Land Berlin, the tenth conference for fraud prosecutors had gathered participants from Member States, candidate countries and EFTA states to discuss the cooperation of a future European Public Prosecutor's Office with national prosecution services.
