The Directive aims to counteract illegal immigration by targeting the employment of non-EU nationals who are illegally staying in the European Union. The Directive provides for minimum common standards on sanctions and other measures (such as disqualification from public benefits) and, in serious cases, criminal penalties against employers of said nationals.
