  • Abused Domestic Workers in Europe. The case of au pairs

October 2011, European Parliament, 139 pages

This study, commissioned by the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality of the European Parliament, focuses on the case of young women employed as domestic workers under the cover of the statute of au pair as potential victims of trafficking and exploitation.

This study analyses au pair arrangements in six EU Member States (Denmark, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain). It acknowledges that some European countries hardly recognize the presence of migrant domestic workers, the existing high demand for their services and how positively they could prove to be in the contribution to the economic welfare of the societies.

The study finally provides an overview and a comparative analysis of this issue within the EU and with relevant recommendations to handle it efficiently.
