Impact assessment

Impact assessments are conducted for all major policy proposals to guide decision-makers and so improve the quality of legislation.

Impact assessment is a process conducted to support the development of policy. The aim is to make the best possible evidence base available to those who are responsible for making choices and taking decisions.

This involves considering the key issues and objectives, then finding possible options to reach these objectives and evaluating the economic, social and environmental impact of these alternative scenarios.

The consultation of stakeholders allows the Commission to expand its knowledge base and analytical capability by the integration of their professional expertise and views during key stages of the policy shaping process.

This approach contributes to a better understanding of the issues at stake as well as the advantages, disadvantages and trade-offs associated with different policy options.
