Trade Agreements

Trade relations with South Africa (SA) are governed by the Trade, Development and Cooperation Agreement (TDCA български (bg)czech (cs)dansk (da)Deutsch (de)eesti (et)ελληνικά (el)español (es)Français (fr)Gaeilge (ga)hrvatski (bg)italiano (it)latviešu (lv)lietuvių (lt)magyar (hu)Malti (mt)Nederlands (nl)polski (pl)português (pt)română (ro)slovenčina (sk)slovenščina (sl)suomi (fi)svenska (sv)) of 1999, which has been in force since May 2004.

Duties applied on most SA agricultural exports to the EU have been gradually phased out over a 10 year transitional period and all EU liberalisation commitments were implemented by January 2010.

On the SA side, the transitional period for the completion of the tariff reduction schedule was 12 years. The products fully liberalised by 2012 include certain vegetables, cereals, prepared meat products, olive oil, and sparkling wine and wine tariff rate quotas (TRQs) that RSA has opened to the EU.

Certain EU products also remain subject to partial liberalisation under tariff rate quotas (TRQs) and some are excluded from any concessions.

This trade is very important for both the EU and the Republic of South Africa, with RSA's exports accounting for about 370 million EUR in 2012.
