Cooperation on Geographical Indications (GIs)

Joint AU-EU workshop on GIs in Kampala, Uganda, on 10-11 November 2011: "Creating value through Geographical Indications: the power of origin"

 

Discussions with African Intellectual Property organisations, such as African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) and l’Organisation africaine de la propriété intellectuelle (OAPI). This includes the 2012 Stonetown Administrative Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation on GIs pdf - 50 KB [50 KB] between ARIPO and the Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Commission.

 

Brussels Briefing, 15 May 2013: ‘Food, geography and traditions: Protecting agricultural traditional products’, looking at the challenges and opportunities for protecting traditional knowledge and registered agricultural products in a sustainable way in ACP countries.

 

The European Commission's Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development is also managing a study on the value of marketing agricultural products using GIs and origin branding. Case studies will look at this in terms of cocoa from Cameroon and coffee from Kenya. The study should be finalised and published in December 2013.
