Economic analysis and evaluation

The Commission conducts economic analysis contributing to the evolution of the Common Agricultural Policy by analysing the efficiency of its various support mechanisms and developing a long-term perspective.

This includes research, analysis and impact assessments, on topics related to agriculture and the rural economy in the EU and third countries.

We produce economic and quantitative studies involving short, medium and long-term forecasts of EU and world agricultural commodity markets.

We also provide analysis of the agricultural trade policies of major WTO players, focusing on bilateral and multilateral trade issues and the impact of individual agricultural policies on world markets.

We produce micro-economic analyses of agricultural holdings, based on farm level data in the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) database; the only source of harmonised micro-economic data at EU level. The data are collected by the Member States through an annual survey.

We undertake evaluations and studies on policy instruments and measures financed by the CAP. To ensure that analyses are objective, most evaluations are commissioned from external researchers.

We also collect and publish a wide range of economic and statistical data in cooperation with Eurostat.
